Hiploc: Thermoformable Hip Stabilizing Orthosis
Description:
The Hiploc orthosis is designed for dislocation prevention following total hip arthroplasty (THA). It allows for movement within the hip joint’s permissible range, preventing movements that could cause dislocation.
Indications for Use:
- Hip joint instability
- Hip joint stabilization in cases of weak thigh muscles and predisposition to dislocation after THA
- Hip joint stabilization after dislocation reduction following THA
Product Description:
The orthosis comprises a module for the right or left half of the pelvis (polyethylene), a thigh cuff (polyethylene), and an adjustable aluminum stabilizing bar. The fixation system uses a flexible, polyamide-coated strap with markings for secure pelvic attachment. See label for detailed information.
Orthosis Adjustment:
The new model of the Hiploc hip stabilizing orthosis features a unilateral pelvic module integrated with a hinge, allowing for adjustable hip flexion and extension angles. This module covers the lateral and posterior (up to the sacral area) aspects of the pelvic ring. The hinge should be positioned to align with the hip joint. Hip flexion can be limited to 90°, 60°, or 30°, while extension is limited to 10°.
The pelvic module is made of thermoformable polyethylene, allowing for custom fitting. The polyethylene thigh cuff is positioned above the knee. This cuff is connected to the thigh via the hinge, ensuring coordinated movement and a secure fit. The adjustable guiding stabilizer bar easily adapts to the patient’s thigh length. Two metal rods comprising the bar are overlaid to the required length and secured with screws. Adjusting the bar length requires consideration of patient anatomy and leg movement (internal/external rotation). Once the length is determined, the rods are fastened with screws.
Orthosis Fixation System:
The flexible fixation strap is primarily inelastic, containing only a small amount of elastic material. The strap’s length accommodates waists from 80 to 140 cm. The adjustable portion is located at the rear and can be shortened with scissors. For convenience, it attaches to the pelvic module using a hook-and-loop fastener. A wide hook-and-loop fastener at the front securely fixes the pelvic module, accommodating individual anatomy.
The orthosis features a removable, washable cover. This cover, encompassing the pelvic module and attaching to the front and rear fixation straps, ensures comfort. The adjustable strap length and its versatile anterior attachment allow for customized fitting. The adjustable guiding stabilizer bar connects the pelvic module to the thigh cuff. Adjusting the bar’s length optimizes thigh cuff height relative to the pelvic module.
Duration of Use:
The orthosis is recommended for 3-6 weeks post-THA while dislocation risk remains. In cases of hip dislocation, continuous wear for 3-6 months post-reduction is recommended.
Product Versions:
The orthosis is available in right and left versions.
