Glycerin Microlax 5ml: Gentle Relief for Constipation and Dryness
Description
Glycerin Microlax 5ml is a clear, hygroscopic, syrup-like liquid with a sweet taste, designed for both external and topical (microlax) use. Each 100g contains 90g of glycerin and 10g of purified water.
Therapeutic Group
This preparation acts as a skin protectant and emollient. It is also classified as a laxative for local application, specifically for treating constipation.
Mechanism of Action
Glycerin Microlax provides gentle relief by slightly irritating the rectal mucosa, which reflexively stimulates peristalsis and softens stool. For external use, it protects the skin and moisturizes dry skin and mucous membranes.
Pharmacokinetics
While glycerin is poorly absorbed through the skin, it is readily absorbed by mucous membranes.
Indications
- Constipation: Effective for various types of constipation, including habitual, age-related, and those associated with limited mobility.
- Dryness: Ideal for external application to soothe and moisturize dry skin and mucous membranes.
Dosage and Administration
- Rectal Use (Microlax):
- Children under 6 years: Up to 5ml per day.
- Adults and children over 6 years: 5ml to 15ml per day, ideally administered 15-20 minutes after breakfast.
- How to Use: The 5ml and 10ml microlax units are ready for use. Open the protective foil sachet, remove the cap from the applicator, and administer the required volume. Each microlax unit is for single use only.
- External Use: Apply to affected areas as needed.
Contraindications
- Rectal Use: Hemorrhoids in the exacerbation phase, anal fissures, inflammatory conditions, and tumors of the rectum.
- External Use: Known hypersensitivity to glycerin.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Glycerin can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but consulting a doctor before use is recommended.
Side Effects
- Prolonged External Use: May cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.
- Prolonged Rectal Use: Can lead to rectal irritation and may weaken the natural bowel movement reflex.
Overdose
No specific overdose symptoms have been reported.
Special Precautions
- Avoid regular, long-term use as a laxative.
- Discontinue use once normal bowel function is restored.
- Do not use as a laxative for more than one week without medical advice.
Drug Interactions
Clinically significant interactions with other medications are not described. However, it is advisable to avoid simultaneous application with other topical preparations.
