Pharmacological properties Decoction of buckthorn bark has a laxative effect. Indications for use Inside: short-term use for occasional constipation. Use for the indicated purposes is based on long-term experience only. Method of application and doses 20 g (2 tablespoons) of raw materials are placed in an enameled or other suitable container, pour 200 ml (1 glass) of water at room temperature, cover with a lid, heat in boiling water (water bath) for 30 minutes, cool at room temperature for 10 minutes , filter. The remaining raw material is squeezed out. The volume of the resulting broth is adjusted with boiled water to 200 ml. Adults take 1/2 cup orally, children over 12 years old – 1/4-1/3 cup at night, you can divide the dose into two doses (morning and night). It is recommended to shake the decoction before use. Side effects Taking a decoction of buckthorn bark can lead to discomfort and cramping pain in the abdomen, which may require a dose reduction. Allergic reactions are possible. In case of an overdose, colicky abdominal pain, tenesmus, loose, watery stools may develop. In the event of adverse reactions, including those not listed in this leaflet, you must stop taking the drug and consult a doctor. Contraindications Hypersensitivity, chronic constipation, constipation of neurogenic and endocrine origin, spastic constipation, intestinal obstruction, bleeding, acute abdomen syndrome, appendicitis, intestinal stenosis and atony, inflammatory diseases of the colon (for example, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease), others inflammatory processes in the abdominal cavity, acute febrile conditions, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, hemorrhoids, nephritis, metrorrhagia, pregnancy, lactation, children under 12 years of age. Use during pregnancy and lactation is contraindicated. Use in children Contraindicated in children under 12 years of age. Overdose A single overdose can lead to spastic abdominal pain, intestinal colic, loose watery stools. Long-term abuse of laxatives can lead to electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia and hypocalcemia being the most important), metabolic acidosis, malabsorption of nutrients, weight loss, albuminuria, and hematuria. Weakness and orthostatic hypotension may increase in elderly patients with repeated use of laxatives. After prolonged use of a decoction of buckthorn bark, water and electrolyte disturbances, hypokalemia, cardiac dysfunction, muscle weakness may develop, especially when taking cardiac glycosides, diuretics, corticosteroids or licorice root preparations. With prolonged use of large doses, toxic hepatitis may develop. In case of overdose, you should consult a doctor. Treatment of overdose should include replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses. Blood electrolytes, especially potassium, should be monitored, which is especially important in the elderly. Precautions: Buckthorn bark should only be used if the desired effect is not obtained by changing the diet or using laxatives that increase the volume of intestinal contents. Individual constituents of buckthorn bark are excreted by the kidneys, and the color of the urine may turn orange, which is not clinically significant, but may affect the results of laboratory tests of urine. Buckthorn bark decoction should not be taken continuously for more than 1-2 weeks due to the risk of developing an electrolyte imbalance. The use of stimulant laxatives for more than 2 weeks requires medical supervision. Buckthorn bark should not be taken by patients with abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. Bleeding from the rectum or not having a bowel movement after taking a laxative may indicate a serious illness. Long-term use can lead to dysfunction of the colon (atony) and pigmentation of the colonic mucosa (pseudomelanosis, which usually resolves when the drug is stopped). Abuse of laxatives leads to diarrhea, water and electrolyte imbalance (mainly hypokalemia), which can cause the development of albuminuria, hematuria, cardiac and neuromuscular dysfunction. If constipation persists while using the decoction, stop using the decoction and consult a doctor. Interaction with other drugs Acceleration of the transit of intestinal contents can lead to a decrease in the absorption of drugs taken orally. Electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia) can enhance the effects of cardiac glycosides (digoxin, digitalis preparations, strophanthin). Hypokalemia resulting from long-term abuse of laxatives can also interfere with the effects of antiarrhythmic drugs (eg, quinidine), drugs that cause QT interval prolongation. The simultaneous use of diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root increases the likelihood of developing electrolyte disorders (hypokalemia). If you are taking other medicines at the same time, you should consult your doctor. Influence on the ability to drive a car and work with moving mechanisms No studies have been conducted.
