Name:
Picolax drops for oral administration 7.5 mg 1 ml per vial 30 ml per pack No. 1
Description:
Transparent, colorless or yellowish, slightly viscous solution. The main active substance Sodium picosulfate Release form drops Dosage 30 ml Pharmacological properties Laxative drug. The laxative effect develops after 6-12 hours. Indications for use For short-term use in constipation and diseases requiring relief of defecation. Dosage and administrationAdults. It is recommended to start taking the drug with a dose of 12-13 drops of Picolax® in water. If the effect is excessive, the dose must be reduced. If the laxative effect is insufficient, the dose can be increased. In cases of constipation, a dose of up to 24–32 drops of Picolax® (corresponding to 7.5–10 mg sodium picosulfate) in water is recommended. Children over 4 years of age should take 8-16 drops of Picolax® (corresponding to 2.5-5 mg sodium picosulfate) in water once a day. Picolax® is preferably taken in the evening, the effect occurs the next morning. It is necessary to take a sufficient amount of liquid. Do not exceed the recommended dose. The optimal dose is the minimum sufficient dose to obtain the desired effect. Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than seven consecutive days. The appointment of laxatives for a longer time is possible only after the physician has assessed the specific clinical situation. Use during pregnancy and lactation There are no clinical data on the use of sodium picosulfate during pregnancy. Since sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative, it is recommended, for safety reasons, not to use the drug during pregnancy. If you need to use the drug Picolax during lactation, you should first consult with your doctor to assess the benefit / risk ratio. Precautions As with all laxatives, Picolax® should not be given daily or for long periods. Prolonged or excessive use of the drug can lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance in the body and to hypokalemia. Patients taking Picolax® have reported dizziness and/or fainting. However, the available information from such cases suggests that the syncope was caused by straining to defecate or abdominal pain due to constipation, but they were not associated with sodium picosulfate. Abuse of laxatives (private or prolonged use or in excessive doses) can cause chronic diarrhea with subsequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. In severe cases, dehydration or hypokalemia may develop, which can lead to cardiac dysfunction or neuromuscular disease, especially in the case of concomitant use of cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids. Abuse of laxatives, especially the contact mechanism of action, can cause dependence (and, accordingly, the need for a gradual increase in dosage), chronic constipation and disruption of normal bowel function (intestinal atony). Treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires a physician’s consultation for diagnosis, prescription of medications, and monitoring during therapy. A doctor’s consultation is also necessary if there is a change in the frequency and other characteristics of the act of defecation, lasting more than two weeks, and in the absence of the effect of the use of laxatives. Elderly patients or patients with concomitant diseases should also consult a doctor before using the drug. The medicinal product contains sorbitol and is not recommended for patients with hereditary fructose intolerance. Use in children The drug is contraindicated in children under the age of 4 years. In children aged 4 to 12 years, the drug can be used only after consulting a doctor. The effect of the drug on the ability to drive a car and mechanisms Studies to evaluate the effect of the drug on the ability to drive a car and mechanisms have not been conducted. Patients should be informed that they may experience dizziness or fainting during a parasympathetic vascular reaction (eg, abdominal cramps). If patients experience abdominal cramps, they should avoid potentially hazardous activities such as driving and using machines. Interaction with other drugs Broad-spectrum antibiotics, affecting the intestinal microflora, reduce the effectiveness of Picolax®. With simultaneous use with diuretics or corticosteroids, the likelihood of electrolyte disturbances increases. The electrolyte imbalance that occurs while taking Picolax® in high doses can lead to a deterioration in the tolerability of cardiac glycosides. Milk and antacids can change the effect of a laxative: you must leave an interval of at least one hour before taking a laxative. Laxatives may reduce the absorption of other concomitantly taken orally administered drugs. The simultaneous use of laxatives and other drugs is not recommended: after taking the drug, it is necessary to wait an interval of at least 2 hours before taking a laxative. Picolax® may increase the effect of oral anticoagulants and alter glucose tolerance. Contraindications Hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate, triarylmethane derivatives or other components of the drug; narrowing of the intestinal lumen with impaired passage of intestinal masses, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions (eg, appendicitis); acute inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract; acute abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting, as these symptoms may be manifestations of the above acute diseases; in diseases associated with impaired water and electrolyte balance (for example, severe renal failure), the drug can only be used under medical supervision; children’s age up to 4 years; severe dehydration; pregnancy. Composition 1 ml (24 drops) contains 7.5 mg of sodium picosulfate as an active substance. Excipients: non-crystallizing sorbitol solution, propylene glycol, purified water. OverdoseSymptoms When taking the drug in large doses, watery stools (diarrhea), abdominal cramps and a clinically significant loss of potassium and other electrolytes may occur. When taking doses of the drug, much higher than the doses recommended for normal constipation, ischemia of the colonic mucosa may occur. As with any laxative, Picolax® may cause chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism and kidney stones when taken in high doses for a long time. Chronic and prolonged use of laxatives causes damage to the renal tubules, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness due to hypokalemia. Treatment In case of acute overdose within a short time after ingestion, the absorption of the drug can be reduced or prevented by inducing vomiting or gastric lavage. If necessary, take measures to compensate for fluid losses and restore electrolyte balance. In some cases, it may make sense to use antispasmodics. Side effect The frequency of occurrence of adverse reactions is indicated as: very often (? 1/10); often (from? 1/100 to <1/10); infrequently (from? 1/1000 to <1/100); rarely (from? 1/10,000 to <1/1000); very rarely (< 1/10,000); or unknown (cannot be estimated from the available data). From the immune system Not known: allergic reactions (including skin reactions and swelling of the skin and / or mucous membranes (angioneurotic edema), for example, in the face and throat, possibly difficulty breathing). From the nervous system Infrequently: dizziness. Not known: fainting. Available information suggests that these ailments are due to straining during defecation or a reaction of the cardiovascular system to abdominal pain. From the gastrointestinal tract Very often: diarrhea. Often: flatulence, abdominal pain or abdominal colic. Uncommon: nausea and vomiting. In the event of adverse reactions, including those not listed in this leaflet, you must stop taking the drug and consult a doctor. Storage conditions Store in a place protected from light at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C. Keep out of the reach of children.
