Unna Boot Zinc Oxide and Calamine Paste Bandage: Effective Leg Ulcer Treatment
Description:
Unna Boot is a zinc oxide and calamine paste bandage designed for the treatment of leg ulcers. This 10cm x 7m bandage features a transparent fabric impregnated with a paste containing 10% zinc oxide BP, iron oxide, and other soothing ingredients including glycerin, cetostearyl alcohol, cetomacrogol, white soft paraffin, guar gum, xanthan gum, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, and propyl parahydroxybenzoate. The bandage is wound onto a plastic spool, individually wrapped, sealed in a polyethylene bag, and packaged in a cardboard box.
Mechanism of Action:
Unna Boot creates a moist wound healing environment, reducing irritation and soothing the surrounding skin. The unique formulation ensures the bandage remains moist throughout use, promoting faster healing.
Indications:
Unna Boot effectively treats venous leg ulcers. When treating venous insufficiency, apply the bandage under a compression bandage of appropriate pressure. It may also be suitable for the treatment of chronic eczema/dermatitis when occlusion is recommended by a physician.
Contraindications:
Do not use if allergic to any component.
Precautions:
- Venous Insufficiency: Always use under a compression bandage of appropriate pressure. Prior to application, assess the patient for arterial disease (ABI < 0.8) using ultrasound Doppler examination. Do not use a compression bandage if arterial disease is present.
- Arterial Disease: Do not use if the patient has arterial disease (ABI < 0.8).
- Diabetes: Avoid use if the patient has diabetes with progressive small vessel disease.
- Reduced Arterial Blood Flow: Untreated reduced arterial blood flow can lead to necrosis, amputation, or even death due to compression. The risk of arterial and venous disease increases with age.
- Sensitive Skin: The skin of patients with leg ulcers is highly sensitive. Suspect allergic reactions in patients with compromised skin integrity; refer to a specialist for diagnosis and allergy testing.
- Increased Absorption: Compression bandages increase absorption. Exercise caution when using topical medications (steroids, anesthetics, or retinoids) as the bandage may significantly increase absorption, potentially shortening anesthetic duration or increasing allergy risk.
- Single Use Only: For single-patient use only to prevent cross-contamination and infection. Discard after use; do not reuse.
Instructions for Use:
Unna Boot is ready to use upon removal from its packaging. Apply using one of two methods:
- Spiral Method: Begin at the toes and apply the bandage spirally around the foot, heel, and leg, almost to the knee. Smooth and flatten the bandage around the leg.
- Overlap Method: Begin at the toes and wrap around the foot and heel. From the ankle upwards, overlap each turn onto the previous one at the front of the leg, almost to the knee. A compression bandage can then be applied. Use additional secondary dressing material to protect clothing.
Change the dressing as needed; may be worn for up to 7 days.
Storage:
Store in a dry place below 25°C (77°F). Do not use if the packaging is damaged or opened.
