Unna Boot Zinc Oxide and Calamine Paste Bandage: Effective Leg Ulcer Treatment
Product Description:
The Unna Boot zinc oxide and calamine paste bandage offers a superior solution for managing leg ulcers and related skin conditions. This 10cm x 9.1m bandage, manufactured by Zhejiang Top-medical Medical Dressing Co., Ltd. (China), is crafted from a transparent fabric impregnated with a paste containing 10% zinc oxide BP, iron oxide, and other key ingredients for effective wound healing. The paste also includes purified water BP, glycerin BP, cetostearyl alcohol BP, cetomacrogol BP, white soft paraffin BP, guar gum, xanthan gum, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate BP, and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate BP. Each bandage is individually wrapped and packaged for hygiene and preservation. Distributed by Phleboton in Russia.
Mechanism of Action:
The Unna Boot bandage creates a moist wound healing environment, reducing irritation, soothing the skin, and providing a protective barrier. Its unique formulation prevents the bandage from drying out during use, ensuring consistent therapeutic benefits.
Indications:
Highly effective in treating venous leg ulcers. When managing venous insufficiency, apply the bandage under a compression bandage of appropriate pressure. Also suitable for the treatment of chronic eczema/dermatitis when occlusion is recommended by a physician.
Contraindications:
Do not use if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the components.
Precautions:
- Venous Insufficiency: Use under a compression bandage of appropriate pressure only after a thorough patient assessment to rule out arterial disease. A Doppler ultrasound examination is recommended. Do not use with compression bandaging if the patient has arterial disease (ABPI < 0.8).
- Arterial Disease: Do not use if the patient has diagnosed peripheral arterial disease.
- Diabetes: Do not use if the patient has progressive small vessel disease associated with diabetes.
- Compromised Arterial Blood Flow: Using the bandage with undiagnosed or untreated reduced arterial blood flow may lead to necrosis, amputation, or death due to compression.
- Age and Risk: The risk of arterial and venous disease increases with age.
- Skin Sensitivity: The skin of patients with leg ulcers is highly sensitive to topical preparations, including antiseptics. Suspect allergic reactions in patients with impaired skin integrity. Refer these patients to a specialist for diagnosis and allergy testing.
- Increased Absorption: Compression bandages increase absorption. Exercise caution when applying topical preparations (steroids, anesthetics, or retinoids) as the bandage may significantly increase their absorption, potentially shortening the anesthetic effect or increasing the allergy risk.
Instructions for Use:
The bandage is ready to use upon removal from its sealed packaging. Two application methods are available:
- Spiral Method: Begin at the base of the toes and apply the bandage spirally around the foot, heel, and leg, extending almost to the knee. Smooth and flatten the bandage around the leg after application.
- Overlap Method: Begin at the base of the toes and apply the bandage around the foot and heel. Starting at the ankle, overlap each subsequent wrap onto the previous layer at the front of the leg. Continue to the knee. A compression bandage may then be applied. Use a secondary dressing to protect clothing.
Change the bandage as needed; wear for up to 7 days. For single patient use only to prevent cross-contamination. Discard after use.
Storage:
Store in a dry place below 25°C/77°F. Do not use if the packaging is open or damaged.
