Unna Boot Zinc Oxide and Calamine Dressing: 10cm x 5m
Description:
The Unna Boot is a zinc oxide and calamine impregnated bandage, ideal for the treatment of leg ulcers. This 10cm x 5m dressing is constructed from a transparent fabric impregnated with a paste containing 10% Zinc Oxide BP, Iron Oxide, and other carefully selected ingredients including purified water BP, glycerin BP, cetostearyl alcohol BP, cetomacrogol BP, white soft paraffin BP, guar gum, xanthan gum, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate BP, and propyl p-hydroxybenzoate BP. The bandage is wound onto a plastic spool, individually wrapped, sealed in a polyethylene bag, and packaged in a cardboard box for hygiene and protection.
Mechanism of Action:
The Unna Boot creates a moist wound healing environment, reducing irritation and soothing the surrounding skin. Its unique formulation ensures the bandage remains moist throughout use, promoting effective healing of leg ulcers.
Indications:
This bandage is indicated for the treatment of:
- Venous leg ulcers (use under compression bandaging for venous insufficiency).
- Chronic eczema/dermatitis (when occlusion is recommended by a physician).
Contraindications:
Do not use if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients.
Precautions:
- Venous insufficiency: Always use under appropriate compression bandaging, following a proper patient assessment to rule out arterial disease (ABPI <0.8). An ultrasound Doppler examination is recommended. Do not use compression bandaging if arterial disease is present.
- Arterial disease: Do not use if the patient has arterial disease (ABPI <0.8).
- Diabetes: Do not use if the patient has diabetes with progressive small vessel disease.
- Compromised arterial blood flow: If reduced arterial blood flow is suspected (even if not diagnosed), using this bandage may lead to necrosis, amputation, or even death due to compression.
- Age-related risk: The risk of both arterial and venous disease increases with age.
- Sensitive skin: The skin of patients with leg ulcers is highly sensitive. Suspect allergic reactions in patients with compromised skin integrity and refer them to a specialist for diagnosis and allergy testing.
- Increased absorption: Compression bandages increase absorption. Exercise caution when using topical medications (steroids, anesthetics, or retinoids) concurrently, as the bandage can significantly increase their absorption, potentially shortening anesthetic duration or increasing the risk of allergic reactions.
- Single-use only: For external use only. This product is for single patient use only. Reuse may lead to cross-contamination and infection. Do not store unused portions of the opened package.
Application Instructions:
The bandage is ready to use after removal from the sealed packaging and wrapper. Two application methods are available:
- Spiral Method: Begin at the base of the toes and apply the bandage spirally around the foot, heel, and leg, extending almost to the knee. Smooth and flatten the bandage around the leg after application.
- Overlap Method: Begin at the base of the toes and apply the bandage around the foot and heel. As you move upwards from the ankle, overlap each subsequent wrap onto the previous one at the front of the leg, creating a layered effect. Continue this method almost to the knee. A compression bandage can then be applied. To prevent staining clothes, apply a secondary dressing over the Unna Boot.
Change the dressing as needed, but it can be worn for up to 7 days.
Storage:
Store in a dry place (<25°C/77°F). Do not use if the packaging is open or damaged.
