Bistort root has a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of conditions. These include:
Internal Use
- Gastrointestinal issues: Diarrhea, dysentery, colitis, enteritis, gastritis, peptic ulcers, chronic pancreatitis, hemorrhoids.
- Bleeding: Hemoptysis (coughing up blood), uterine bleeding, intestinal bleeding, gastric bleeding.
- Urinary tract infections: Cystitis, urethritis, kidney stones, bladder stones.
- Liver and gallbladder conditions: Cholecystitis, gallstones.
- Nervous disorders.
- Menstrual irregularities: Heavy menstrual bleeding, menorrhagia, leucorrhea.
- Inflammatory conditions: Generally aids inflammation.
External Use
- Oral health: Gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontitis, toothache, bad breath (mouthwashes and gargles).
- Skin conditions: Wounds, cuts, ulcers, burns, eczema, boils, warts, corns (compresses, washes, poultices).
- Gynecological issues: Vaginitis, leucorrhea (douches).

Traditional Preparation Methods
Infusion (Internal)
1 tbsp. of dried, crushed rhizomes in a thermos with 1 cup boiling water, steep for 8 hours, strain. Take 1 tbsp. 3-4 times daily for acute and chronic gastrointestinal issues.
Infusion (External)
3-4 tsp. of crushed rhizomes in 1 cup boiling water, steep for 20 minutes. Use warm for mouthwashes and compresses.
Decoction (Internal)
1 tbsp. of crushed rhizomes in 200ml water, simmer for 30 minutes, strain immediately. Take 1 tbsp. 3-4 times daily before meals.
Decoction (Internal, for stones)
2 tbsp. of crushed rhizomes in 1 liter water, simmer for 20 minutes, cool, strain. Take ½ cup 2-3 times daily (with a low-meat, fish, and spicy food diet).
Decoction (Internal, for GI issues)
2 tbsp. of dried, crushed rhizomes in 1 cup water, simmer for 10 minutes, cool, strain. Bring volume back to 200ml with boiled water. Take 1 tbsp. 3-4 times daily. Dilute 1 tbsp. in ½ cup water for mouthwashes and compresses.
Wine Decoction
50g of powdered rhizomes in 5 liters of dry red wine, simmer covered for 10 minutes, let cool, do not strain. Take ¼ cup 4 times daily for colitis.
Decoction (External)
15g of crushed rhizomes in 0.5 liters of water, simmer for 30 minutes, cool, strain. Use for compresses, washes, douches.
Extract
Mix crushed rhizomes with 70% alcohol (1:1 ratio). Steep for 2 weeks. Take 20-30 drops 2-3 times daily before meals.
Tincture
100g crushed rhizomes in 0.5 liters of 70% alcohol, steep for 15 days, shaking occasionally. Strain and take 30-40 drops 2-3 times daily before meals. Can be used externally.
Powder
Take a pinch (0.5-1g) 3 times daily with water for diarrhea and dysentery.
