Procedure:

1. An olive-shaped tip is inserted into the nostril.
2. The other nostril is pressed against the nasal septum.
3. The patient pronounces certain sounds, such as “pop” (or similar words involving forceful expulsion of air). The production of consonant sounds raises the soft palate, separating the nasopharynx from the oropharynx.
4. Simultaneously, the bulb is squeezed forcefully, directing air into the nasopharynx and Eustachian tubes.
5. The success of the inflation depends on the airtight seal in the nose and the pressure applied to the bulb.

The patency of the Eustachian tubes using the Politzer method is primarily determined by the patient’s sensation. In rare cases, inflation may cause dizziness, a feeling of pressure in the forehead, or severe ear pain during the procedure. Therefore, such procedures should only be performed in a medical facility by an ENT specialist.

Contraindications:

Ear inflation with a Politzer balloon is contraindicated during acute inflammation of the nose and nasopharynx due to the risk of infection spreading from the nasopharynx to the ear canals.
