Pavlik Harness Size 2: Gentle Support for Hip Dysplasia

Description:

The Pavlik Harness, size 2, provides gentle support for infants with hip dysplasia, helping to maintain proper hip positioning. This harness features a chest strap (crossing the child’s back and chest) positioned at nipple level to prevent underarm chafing. The strap should fit snugly but not tightly, ensuring comfortable breathing. Leg straps securely hold the feet and lower legs in place. All harness components utilize Velcro closures and adjustable buckles for a precise, customized fit.

Indications:

This harness is indicated for infants with hip dysplasia, including preluxation, subluxation, and dislocation of the hip. It’s suitable for children aged three weeks to nine months.

Application:

The harness is worn over cotton clothing. The chest strap is secured across the child’s chest and fastened with Velcro on the back. The “boot” sections attach to the child’s legs using Velcro closures at the front. Excess strap length can be trimmed with scissors as needed.

Proper application involves attaching the front straps to the chest strap, positioning the hips and knees at the recommended angle. Buckles adjust the straps to achieve optimal positioning. Posterior straps are then tightened with buckles, ensuring minimal abduction of the hips before securing to the chest strap. Finally, shoulder straps attach to the chest strap, and are adjusted using buckles. For hip dislocation, abduction should gradually increase to 90 degrees over several weeks.

The harness should be initially applied by a medical professional. The duration of wear is determined by the child’s physician.

The harness size is determined by the child’s chest circumference:

• 25-35 cm – Size S (1)
• 36-46 cm – Size M (2)
• 47-57 cm – Size L (3)
