Oak Bark, 100g
Description:
Oak bark possesses potent medicinal properties, making it a valuable remedy for a wide array of conditions. Its rich concentration of tannins, along with other bioactive compounds like gallic and ellagic acids, proteins, pectins, quercetin, flobafen, starch, and fatty oils, contributes to its efficacy. These tannins exert a powerful astringent effect, precipitating proteins to form a protective film over damaged skin and mucous membranes. This film shields against irritation and inflammation while simultaneously combating harmful microbes and alleviating pain.
Traditional and Modern Uses:
- Oral Health: Effectively combats various oral infections, including stomatitis, gingivitis, tonsillitis, periodontitis, and pharyngitis. It also freshens breath and helps with bleeding gums. Use as a mouthwash or gargle.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Internally, it acts as an antacid, antimicrobial, and demulcent agent, providing relief from ulcers, gastritis, colitis, and diarrhea. It’s also beneficial in cases of alkaloid poisoning and hemorrhoids.
- Skin Conditions: Topically, oak bark extract proves invaluable in treating burns, frostbite, acne, boils, skin infections, diaper rash, and slow-healing wounds and ulcers. Apply as compresses, washes, or poultices. It also soothes foot conditions such as excessive sweating, calluses, cracks, and chafing.
- Gynecological Applications: Oak bark is traditionally used for vaginal douching to treat conditions like cervical erosion, vaginal discharge (leukorrhea), uterine prolapse, vaginal wall prolapse, vulvovaginitis, and trichomoniasis.
- Hair Care: Incorporating oak bark into hair masks or washes can help strengthen and restore shine to hair, addressing issues like seborrhea and hair loss.
- Other Uses: Oak bark is also used in formulations for treating bedsores.
Preparation Methods & Dosages:
- Tincture: Combine 4 tablespoons of crushed oak bark with 0.5 liters of 40% alcohol (vodka or similar). Steep for 31 days in a cool, dark place, shaking occasionally. Strain and take 1 tablespoon three times daily before meals.
- Mouthwash/Gargle: Steep 2 teaspoons of crushed bark in 1 cup of boiling water in a thermos for 15 minutes. Strain and use ½ cup twice daily for gargling or rinsing.
- Compresses/Poultices: Boil 40 grams of crushed bark in 250 ml of water over low heat for 30 minutes. Steep for 2 hours, then strain. Apply liberally to affected areas 1-3 times daily for 20-60 minutes.
- Compresses (Cancer Treatment – CAUTION): While some traditional uses suggest oak bark for cancer treatment (breast and thyroid), scientific evidence supporting this claim is lacking and it should not be considered a substitute for conventional cancer therapy. Consult your doctor immediately if you have cancer. (1 tbsp. crushed bark steeped in 1 cup water for 12 hours in a thermos, then boiled for 5 minutes, cooled, reboiled, and steeped for 4 hours before use.)
- Douche: Boil 20 grams of crushed bark in 1 cup of hot water for 30 minutes. Steep for another 30 minutes, strain, and dilute with boiled water to 1 liter. Use warm for douching once or twice daily.
