Description: Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) exhibits sedative, hypotensive, spasmolytic, and mild diuretic properties. It slows the heart rate, increases the force of heart contractions, and regulates the menstrual cycle. Its effects are similar to valerian, but 2-3 times stronger. Motherwort preparations are frequently indicated for increased nervous excitability (especially if related to menopause), insomnia, and hysteria. As a sedative, they are used for neuroses, angina pectoris, and hypertension. As a cardiotonic, they are used for psychasthenia, neurasthenia, and vasovegetative dystonia. During pregnancy, these preparations are indicated for toxicosis and to improve the function of the digestive and excretory systems. Motherwort is also prescribed for heart defects, cardiosclerosis, myocarditis, myocardiodystrophy, and various menstrual irregularities.
