Red root (forgotten pennyroyal, South Siberian pennyroyal, bear root, dark pennyroyal) belongs to the legume family. This is a perennial herbaceous plant with a woody root that extends deep into the soil. Today, red root (tea pennyroyal) is a popular medicinal plant, primarily found in the mountains and the Altai Mountains. Siberian healers use it to treat urogenital diseases, oncology, anemia, and as a general tonic and stimulant.
Many legends surround red root. One tells of how bears, during spring or illness, dig up and consume the root, leading to its nickname “bear root.” Legend also speaks of Old Believers seeking Belovodye—a paradise on Earth—who were afflicted by plague and weakness. A brown bear, the Master of the Mountains, brought them a plant with lush green leaves and a red root, saving them from the plague. Some reached Belovodye, while others settled in Altai, using red root for various ailments. It is treasured for its ability to protect against fevers, diarrhea, scrofula, and negative thoughts.
Red root possesses anti-inflammatory, expectorant, diuretic, analgesic, hemopoietic, and hemostatic properties. It stimulates the central nervous system and boosts immunity. It’s used for:
- Prostate diseases (prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia)
- Lung diseases (tuberculosis, bronchitis, asthma, pleurisy, pneumonia)
- Impotence
- Breast diseases
- Bladder diseases (cystitis, urinary retention)
- Kidney diseases (pyelonephritis, nephritis)
- Blood diseases (anemia)
- Central nervous system diseases
- Immune system disorders (herpes, enlarged lymph nodes, spleen)
- Liver diseases
- Ascites
- Uterine prolapse, rectal prolapse
- Uterine bleeding
The roots contain a high concentration of tannins. In folk medicine, a decoction of pennyroyal roots is used for gastrointestinal diseases, diarrhea, headaches, anemia, nervous and women’s health issues, as well as a diuretic and general tonic.
For chronic prostatitis:
A decoction or tea is most effective. For example, prepare a “Bear’s Gift” infusion by simmering approximately 25g of red root in 1 liter of boiling water for an hour in a thermos. Drink like tea, adding honey and milk if desired. Alternatively, brew 1 teaspoon of crushed red root in 1 cup of boiling water like tea and drink ¼ cup four times a day. This is beneficial for influenza, acute respiratory viral infections, and uterine bleeding. For men, it helps prevent impotence, prostatitis, bladder, and kidney diseases.
For acute prostatitis:
A red root balm is more effective. This balm has pronounced anti-tumor and stimulating effects, acting as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, tonic, and hemostatic agent. Prepare by steeping 50g of dry red root in 450ml of vodka for 7-10 days in a dark place at room temperature. Strain and consume 1-3 teaspoons 2-3 times daily 30 minutes before meals, dissolved in warm herbal or green tea. Avoid evening consumption within 3 hours of sleep. Use for 1-3 months, followed by a 1-month break. 2-4 courses per year are recommended for optimal results. This balm can also be used for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, anemia, prostatitis, and reproductive disorders in both men and women. It is also helpful for infectious diseases (influenza, ARVI), sinusitis, and other conditions.
