Marsh Cinquefoil (Potentilla palustris) boasts a wide array of therapeutic properties, including vasodilating (peripheral vessels), anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, astringent, spasmolytic, sedative, and wound-healing effects. It also exhibits cardio-depressant effects, lowering blood pressure and promoting intestinal peristalsis, while simultaneously increasing blood clotting. Marsh Cinquefoil preparations are traditionally used in the early stages of hypertension, angina pectoris, insomnia, and peptic ulcers (stomach and duodenal). For hypertension, combining internal use with foot baths infused with the herb can enhance treatment efficacy. It’s particularly effective in treating peptic ulcers, often used in combination with common gromwell (Lithospermum officinale). Externally, aqueous infusions, oil extracts, or ointments are applied to promote healing of burns and slow-healing wounds.
