Description:
Geviran tablets p/o 800mg are coated, round, biconvex tablets containing the antiviral drug Acyclovir. Each blister pack contains 10 tablets, with 3 packs per box (total 30 tablets).
How Geviran Works:
Acyclovir is a synthetic analogue of the purine nucleoside, which effectively inhibits the replication of Herpes viruses in both the lab and the human body. It specifically targets viruses such as:
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 (causing cold sores and genital herpes)
- Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) (causing chickenpox and shingles)
Acyclovir works by tricking viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme essential for viral replication. It is incorporated into the viral DNA, effectively stopping the virus from making copies of itself. This targeted action minimizes harm to healthy cells.
Indications for Use:
Geviran is indicated for treating infections caused by Herpes simplex virus and Varicella-Zoster virus, including:
- Genital Herpes: Treatment of primary and recurrent outbreaks (excluding neonatal herpes and severe cases in immunocompromised children)
- Suppressive Therapy: Prevention of recurrent Herpes simplex outbreaks in patients with intact immunity.
- Prophylaxis: Prevention of Herpes simplex outbreaks in patients with immunodeficiency.
- Chickenpox and Shingles: Treatment of infections caused by Varicella-Zoster virus.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults:
- Herpes Simplex Virus Infections: 200mg five times a day (every 4 hours) for 5 days. Dosage can be increased to 400mg in severe cases or patients with compromised immunity.
- Suppressive Therapy (Intact Immunity): 200mg four times a day (every 6 hours) or 400mg twice a day (every 12 hours). Dosage can be adjusted as needed.
- Prophylaxis (Immunodeficiency): 200mg four times a day (every 6 hours), potentially increased to 400mg in patients with compromised immunity.
- Varicella-Zoster Virus and Herpes Zoster: 800mg five times a day (every 4 hours) with a night break for 7 days.
Children:
- Herpes Simplex Virus Infections (Immunocompromised): Children 2 years and older receive the same dose as adults. Children under 2 receive half the adult dose.
Important Note: Always consult your doctor for dosage recommendations and to discuss any concerns you may have.
Use in Elderly and Patients with Impaired Renal Function:
- Dose adjustments may be necessary in elderly patients due to potential renal function impairment.
- Patients with renal insufficiency require careful monitoring and dose adjustments.
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, itching, and rash.
Rare side effects include:
- Anaphylactic reactions
- Neurological symptoms (agitation, disorientation, tremor, hallucinations, seizures)
- Liver and kidney problems
It’s important to note that these side effects are usually transient and more common in patients with renal insufficiency or other predisposing factors.
Interactions with Other Drugs:
Geviran may interact with other medications, including:
- Drugs excreted by active tubular secretion: May increase plasma concentrations of other drugs.
- Probenecid and Cimetidine: May increase Acyclovir levels.
- Mycophenolate Mofetil: May increase levels of both Acyclovir and its inactive metabolite.
- Theophylline: May increase theophylline levels.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
- Geviran is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but always discuss its use with your doctor.
- Acyclovir is present in breast milk, so consult with your doctor regarding potential risks to the infant.
Overdose:
Overdose symptoms may include gastrointestinal discomfort, neurological symptoms, and renal impairment. Seek immediate medical attention.
Storage:
Store Geviran tablets in the original packaging, protected from light and moisture at room temperature (below 25°C). Keep out of reach of children.

Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders Rare: dyspnoea. Gastrointestinal disorders Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. Liver and biliary tract disorders Rare: transient increase in bilirubin levels and increased liver transaminase activity in the blood. Very rare: hepatitis, jaundice. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders Common: itching, rash (also increased sensitivity to light). Infrequently: urticaria, accelerated, generalized alopecia. Since accelerated, generalized alopecia can be caused by most diseases and the use of many drugs, its relationship with the action of acyclovir is not obvious. Rare: Quincke's edema. Renal and urinary disorders Rare: increased serum creatinine and urea levels. Very rare: acute renal failure, kidney pain. Pain in the kidneys may be associated with insufficiency of the kidney(s) and crystalluria. The patient's hydration status should be monitored. Renal impairment usually resolves quickly after the patient is rehydrated and/or the dose is reduced or the drug is discontinued. In exceptional cases, acute renal failure may occur. General disorders and disorders at the injection site Common: fatigue, fever. In case of adverse reactions, including those not listed in this leaflet, you should immediately consult a doctor. |
