What the drug is and what it is used for Fluconazole-LF belongs to a group of medicines called “antifungal medicines”. The active substance of this drug is fluconazole. Fluconazole-LF is used in adults to treat infections caused by fungi. The most common cause of fungal infections is a yeast called Candida. Symptoms of thrush include itching, burning in the vagina and vulva, and cheesy discharge. Your doctor may prescribe this drug for you to treat thrush, a female or male genital infection. Fluconazole-LF is used in cases where topical cream/suppository treatment is not appropriate. Pharmacotherapeutic group Antifungal agents for systemic use. Triazole derivatives. ATX code: J02AC01. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to fluconazole, other medicines you have previously taken to treat fungal infections, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine; allergy symptoms may include itching, redness of the skin, or difficulty breathing; – if you are taking astemizole, terfenadine (antihistamine medicines used to treat allergies); – if you are taking cisapride (a drug used to treat indigestion); – if you are taking pimozide (a drug used to treat mental illness); – if you are taking quinidine (a drug used to treat heart rhythm disturbances); – if you are taking erythromycin (an antibiotic used to treat infections). Special instructions and precautionsBefore using Fluconazole-LF, tell your doctor or pharmacist that: – you have problems with your liver or kidneys; – you suffer from a cardiovascular disease, including heart rhythm disturbances; – you have a violation of the content of potassium, calcium or magnesium in the blood; – you have experienced the development of severe skin reactions (itching, redness of the skin or difficulty breathing); – you have developed signs of “adrenal insufficiency”, when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of certain steroid hormones such as cortisol (chronic or prolonged fatigue, muscle weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain). Children and teenagers This drug is for the treatment of adults. Fluconazole-LF 150 mg contains lactose (milk sugar) This drug contains a small amount of lactose (milk sugar). If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this drug. Other drugs and this drug Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking, have recently taken or may be taking any other medicines. Tell your doctor right away if you are taking astemizole, terfenadine (an antihistamine drug for allergies), cisapride (a drug used to treat indigestion), pimozide (a drug used to treat mental illness), quinidine (a drug used to treat heart rhythm problems), or erythromycin (an antibacterial drug for the treatment of infection), since they cannot be used simultaneously with Fluconazole-LF. Some drugs may interact with Fluconazole-LF. Make sure your doctor knows that you are taking the following medicines: – rifampicin or rifabutin (antibacterial medicines to treat infections); – alfentanil, fentanyl (painkillers); – amitriptyline, nortriptyline (antidepressants); – amphotericin B, voriconazole (antifungal drugs); – medicines that thin the blood to prevent blood clots (warfarin or similar medicines); – benzodiazepines (midazolam, triazolam or similar drugs) to treat insomnia or anxiety; – carbamazepine, phenytoin (drugs used to treat seizures); – olaparib (a drug used to treat ovarian cancer); – nifedipine, isradipine, amlodipine, verapamil, felodipine and losartan (drugs used to treat high blood pressure); – cyclosporine, everolimus, sirolimus or tacrolimus (drugs used to prevent transplant rejection); – cyclophosphamide, vinca alkaloids (vincristine, vinblastine or similar drugs) used to treat malignant neoplasms; – halofantrine (a drug used to treat malaria); – statins (atorvastatin, simvastatin and fluvastatin or similar medicines) used to lower high cholesterol; – methadone (pain medicine); – celecoxib, flurbiprofen, naproxen, ibuprofen, lornoxicam, meloxicam, diclofenac (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)); – oral contraceptives; – prednisone (a steroid); – zidovudine, also known as AZT, saquinavir (drugs used to treat HIV-infected patients); – medicines for the treatment of diabetes, such as chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, glipizide or tolbutamide; – theophylline (drug for the control of bronchial asthma); – tofacitinib (used to treat rheumatoid arthritis); – vitamin A (biologically active supplement); – ivacaftor (medicine for the treatment of cystic fibrosis); – amiodarone (used to treat abnormal heart rhythms “arrhythmias”); – hydrochlorothiazide (diuretic). Taking Fluconazole-LF with food and drink Fluconazole-LF can be taken with or without food. Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. You should not take Fluconazole-LF during pregnancy unless your doctor has prescribed Fluconazole-LF. You can continue breastfeeding after a single dose of Fluconazole-LF 150 mg. With repeated use of Fluconazole-LF, you should not breast-feed your baby. Driving and using machines When driving vehicles and working with mechanical equipment, it must be borne in mind that in some cases, when taking this drug, dizziness or convulsions may develop. In the event of dizziness or other disorders of the nervous system, it should be advised not to drive a car and not start working with mechanical equipment. Use of the drugAlways use Fluconazole-LF exactly as recommended by your doctor. If you have any doubts about the use of this drug, consult your doctor. The capsule must be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Adults 150 mg as a single dose. Elderly patients The usual dose as for adults should be taken. Patients with impaired renal function Take the usual dose as for adults. How soon is the effect noticeable? Vaginal candidiasis Within a few days, the symptoms of the disease begin to decrease – some women notice an improvement the next day. Please contact your doctor again if there is no effect after a few days of taking the medicine. Candidiasis in men Symptoms of the disease begin to decrease within a few days, but this can last up to one week. Please contact your doctor again if there is no effect after one week of taking the medicine. If you have taken a larger dose of Fluconazole-LF than prescribed Taking too many capsules at one time may make you feel unwell. Contact your doctor or the nearest hospital emergency department immediately. Symptoms of a possible overdose may include auditory, visual, tactile sensations and imagining things that are not real (hallucinations and paranoid behavior). In case of overdose, symptomatic therapy (including supportive measures and gastric lavage if necessary) may be sufficient. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Fluconazole-LF can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Some patients develop allergic reactions, although serious allergic reactions are rare. If you notice any side effects, including those not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. If you notice any of the following symptoms, tell your doctor immediately: – sudden onset of wheezing, difficulty breathing or chest tightness; – swelling of the eyelids, face or lips; – itching all over the body, redness of the skin or itchy red rashes; – skin rash; – severe skin reactions such as a blistering rash (may involve the mouth and tongue). Fluconazole-LF may have adverse effects on the liver. Signs of impaired liver function include: – fatigue; – loss of appetite; – vomiting; – icteric coloration of the skin or sclera of the eyes (jaundice). With the development of any of these conditions, you should stop taking Fluconazole-LF and immediately consult a doctor. Other adverse reactions: In addition, if any of the following adverse reactions seriously bother you, or if you experience any side effects not listed in this package leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist. Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) – headache; – discomfort in the stomach, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; – increase in biochemical parameters reflecting liver function, – rash. Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): – a decrease in the number of red blood cells, which may manifest as pale skin, weakness or shortness of breath; – loss of appetite; – insomnia, drowsiness; – convulsions, dizziness, a feeling of rotation, a feeling of tingling, tingling or numbness, changes in taste; – constipation, indigestion, flatulence, dry mouth; – muscle pain; – damage to the liver and yellowing of the skin and sclera (jaundice); – papules, blisters (urticaria), itching, increased sweating; – fatigue, general feeling of malaise, fever. Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people): – decreased white blood cells (blood cells that help protect the body from infections) and platelets (blood cells that help stop bleeding); – reddening of the skin or turning purple in the skin, which may be due to low platelets or other changes in blood cells; – changes in the biochemical composition of the blood (high levels of cholesterol, fats in the blood); – low levels of potassium in the blood; – shiver; – pathological changes on the electrocardiogram (ECG), changes in heart rate or rhythm; – liver failure; – allergic reactions (sometimes severe), including a widespread rash with blistering and peeling of the skin, or severe skin reactions, swelling of the lips or face; – hair loss. Frequency not known but likely to occur (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data): – hypersensitivity reaction with skin rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, an increase in a type of white blood cell (eosinophilia) and inflammation of internal organs (liver, lungs, heart, kidney, and large intestine) (drug rash syndrome with eosinophilia and systemic manifestations (DRESS)).
