Traditional Uses & Scientific Basis:
Manchurian aralia’s reputation stems from observations of animals exhibiting increased energy after consuming its leaves and branches. Subsequent research has revealed its rich phytochemical profile, including proteins, carbohydrates, flavonoids, B vitamins, vitamin C, and triterpene saponins. These compounds contribute to its tonic, adaptogenic, and potential blood sugar-regulating effects. The root is significantly more potent than the above-ground parts.
Harvest & Preparation:
Roots are harvested twice yearly (spring and early autumn) from 5-15-year-old plants. Only lateral root branches (3-5cm diameter) are selected.
Preparation Methods:
- Tincture: 100g of crushed root is macerated in 1000ml of 70% alcohol for 2-3 weeks. Strain and press thoroughly. Take 30-40 drops in 50ml of water 2-3 times daily before meals. A 30-day course is recommended, followed by a 1-month break before repeating.
- Decoction: 15-20g of crushed root is simmered in 200ml of boiling water for 30 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes, strain, and top up to 200ml with boiled water. Take 1-2 tablespoons three times daily for 2-3 weeks. Suitable for various conditions including kidney and liver issues, digestive problems, enuresis, diabetes, flu, and colds. Warm decoctions can also be used as a mouthwash.
