How to Put On Your Compression Stockings
By Hand
- Put them on in the morning. Ensure your nails are trimmed and rings are removed.
- Sit on a bed or chair with your leg bent at the knee.
- Turn the stocking inside out to the heel.
- Insert your hand to the heel, grasp the heel, and turn it right-side-out to the heel only.
- Insert two thumbs inside the stocking, stretching it wide.
- Pull the heel section onto your heel, ensuring proper alignment.
- Create a small fold at mid-foot. Grasp and stretch this fold upwards, smoothing the stocking onto your foot and ankle.
- Continue pulling and smoothing the stocking in 5cm sections, ensuring it’s wrinkle-free and the heel remains correctly positioned.
Using a Donning Aid (Butler)
- Place the donning aid on the floor.
- Hold the stocking with the heel facing you.
- Stretch the stocking onto the donning aid up to the heel.
- Insert your foot, placing your foot flat on the floor.
- Pull the donning aid upwards until the stocking reaches your knee.
- Remove the donning aid.
- Smooth the stocking onto your leg.
How to Remove Your Compression Stockings
- Gently grasp the top of the stocking and roll it down towards your ankle and toes.
- Avoid pulling on the elastic band; instead, grasp the knitted fabric.
Important Notes
- If the stocking feels too tight, don’t pull it up further. Lower it and re-apply in sections, stretching more firmly.
- Gloves are recommended when putting on the stockings.
- For knee-high stockings, do not pull them above the kneecap.
- For stockings with a silicone band, avoid applying cream or ointment to the area where the band adheres.
- For tights and men’s compression garments, do not attempt to pull up the compression part if it’s not stretched sufficiently, as this may damage the seams.
- Do not cut the threads or labels to avoid unraveling.
- Wear as recommended by your doctor. If no recommendation is given, wear them in the morning and remove them in the evening.
