The risk of complications in the development of methemoglobinemia is higher in young children, the elderly, patients with hereditary disorders (deficiency of the enzymes glucose-6-phosphodiesterase, pyruvate kinase, NADH-methemoglobin reductase (diaphorase 1), M-hemoglobinopathies), heart disease, diseases respiratory tract (bronchial asthma, bronchitis, emphysema) or in case of smoking. The paraffin excipient may reduce the strength of latex condoms used, thereby impairing their effectiveness (in particular, the ability to prevent pregnancy and / or reduce the risk of transmission of sexually transmitted infections or HIV infection). Very rarely, high doses of benzocaine can cause methemoglobinemia, which is manifested by respiratory distress and cyanosis (see Precautions section). Emergency care for overdose and the development of methemoglobinemia is the intravenous administration of methylene blue. The remaining symptoms of an overdose require discontinuation of the drug and symptomatic treatment.
